TKS Year 8 GCSE Options

Dear Parent/Carer

OPTION CHOICES

An important stage in the educational journey of your son/daughter is approaching, in regard to the qualification routes that they will follow as they complete their academic studies at the school. The curriculum model at The Kibworth School is designed to be engaging and enriching, allowing students access to learning and qualifications that will support them academically, and enhance their own personal development.

Our mission at The Kibworth School is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to follow a curriculum pathway that allows their successful progression into further education, higher education or the world of work.

Our current Year 9 students began their chosen GCSE option subjects during the summer term, which has allowed them to make a positive and successful start to the GCSEs that they selected. Due to the success of this model, we will be repeating the same options process with our current Year 8 students when they move into Year 9.

To ensure that our curriculum fully equips our students for their individual career pathways, students in Year 8 will be required to complete at least one language GCSE as they progress through the school, starting in August 2018. Students will have the ability to select between GCSE French, GCSE Spanish or taking both subjects. If a student decides to take both languages as GCSE subjects, they will be required to complete two additional hours of study after school each week, supported by teachers in our language Department. Any student who requires an individualised curriculum, based on individual needs, will be allocated an alternative curriculum instead of completing a language GCSE pathway. This will be discussed with students and their parent/carer, if deemed most suitable.

Students have been spoken to during their French and Spanish lessons regarding the GCSE languages they may choose from. They have also taken part in an assembly this week, where the options process has been outlined and further information shared.

All Year 8 students have received a Languages Options Form, which will need to be completed and returned to the school by Wednesday 4th July 2018. A copy of the form is attached, which needs to be returned to their tutor, or reception, by this deadline. A copy of the languages GCSE curriculum overview is available on our school website, under Subjects > TKS Curriculum > TKS – Curriculum Overview.

An outline of the options process for current Year 8 students is shown below:

Options timeline:

  • W/C Monday 25th June 2018 – Year 8 assembly regarding GCSE Language Options.
  • Wednesday 4th July 2018 – Deadline for students to return their GCSE Languages Option Form.
  • 31st August 2018 – Students start their GCSE Language Course(s).
  • Thursday 8th November 2018 – Year 9 Options Fayre.
  • W/C Monday 19th November 2018 – Year 9 Options Taster Lessons.
  • Friday 7th December 2018 – Deadline for Year 9 GCSE Options Form to be returned.
  • Monday 29th April 2019 – Year 9 start their GCSE Option Subjects.

During the Autumn term all students will receive a Year 9 Options Booklet, which contains information for each of the subject choices currently available to them, including examination boards and specifications studied, the makeup of the qualification in terms of assessment, and additional guidance to allow informed decisions to be made. Copies of the 2017/18 Options Booklet can be found on the school website, which although may change slightly, will allow you to start thinking about which option pathways your child may take.

This is an exciting time at the school, and we look forward to Year 9 students beginning the next stage in their educational journey at The Kibworth School.

If you have any queries about this process then please do not hesitate to contact me, either by phone on 0116 279 2238 or by e-mail at mrobertson@thekibworthschool.org.

Yours sincerely

Year 11 Examinations/Study Leave

May 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

Year 11 Examinations/Study Leave

As a school we are very proud of the way that our students have approached their current Year 11 examinations. Working alongside our dedicated staff, students are progressing towards achieving
impressive results across all subjects.

As we progress through the examination season I would like to confirm that all Year 11 students are expected to attend their normal timetable lessons up until the end of this half-term. Students will then take part in their Year 11 celebration assembly during the afternoon of Friday 25th May 2018, which will allow us to celebrate their time at the school and all of their achievements. The assembly will finish at the end of the school day, allowing students to retain their normal method of transportation home.

When students return after the half-term holiday their normal timetable will continue, however all students will have the option to work from home when they do not have an examination. Whilst in school students will have the option to work in the school Library at any point, which will be available to them for the duration of their examinations.

All students have a copy of their individual examination timetable, which indicates when each of their examinations is scheduled to take place. An overview of all examinations is also available on the school website.

Please note that all students are required to follow the expectations below after half-term, whether they have chosen to work in school, or attend only when their examinations are taking place:

  • Be in full school uniform.
  • Sign in and out at reception, at the front of the school.
  • Be in the school hall by 8:30 for examinations starting at 9:00.
  • For any examinations taking place after 9:00, to be at their examination room at least 15 minutes before the defined start time.
  • Uphold the Kibworth values and standards at all times.

We look forward to our students having a successful examination period, and thank you all for your support during this time.

If you have any queries regarding the above then please do not hesitate to contact me, either by phone 0116 279 2238 or by email at mrobertson@thekibworthschool.org.

Yours sincerely
